The world's first USB Type-C cable that can carry up to 240W is here. With 240W of power and about 40 Gbps of data support, the USB Type-C 2.1 cables are made by a Dutch manufacturer named Club3D.
According to Tom's Hardware, the cables aren't available on the website. But there's not much usage for such future-ready cables - with no gadgets designed to hold 240W of USB Type-C power yet. As The Verge pointed out, there are no 240W USB Type-C chargers in the market either.
Even Club3D's own chargers max out at 132W. The USB Type-C charging with 240W ought to be powerful enough for most laptops, but might require a little more horsepower eventually - especially for heavyweight gaming laptops. The company has released three new cables - two that can transmit power, data and video and one that is limited to power and slower USB 2.0 data transfer.
In May 2021, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) released the USB-C v2.1 update that outlined Extended Power Range (EPR) standard. The standard essentially extended support to 240W (48V at 5A). Before the update, the standard was limited to 100 W (20V at 5A). It was owing to this that there was limited support for trickle charge using USB Type-C.

What does all this mean? Quite simply that a lot of large devices that suck up heavy power could now be charged using USB Type-C. Current smartphones support charging up to 120W, so it'll be fun to see how the new update speeds up charging speeds on mobiles. Your next laptop could come with USB Type-C charging instead of company-specific chargers.
