Your Phone Won't Run Out Of Battery Charge For A Week, With Samsung And IBM's Chips

Charging your phone once or twice every day? It could soon be a thing of the past if IBM and Samsung's ambitious chip designs bear fruits.

The tech giants have announced a feat in semiconductor design by figuring out a new way to "stack transistors vertically on a chip instead of lying flat on the surface of a semiconductor," The Verge reported.

VTFET - the future of chips!

Officially called the Vertical Transport Field Effect Transistors (VTFET) design, it could extend the battery life of a device on a single charge to an entire week.

Instead of the horizontal layout for transistors that help in batteries of devices, the new design would stack transistors vertically - allowing the current to flow up and down instead of sideways.

Both IBM and Samsung claim that VTFET chips could offer a "two times improvement in performance or an 85 per cent reduction in energy use" when compared to traditional FinFET designs.

Samsung and IBM also have ambitious plans for the VTFET chip design. The companies were quoted by The Verge as claiming to have considered the idea of "cell phone batteries that could go over a week without being charged, instead of days."

?In addition, the chips could help make cryptocurrency mining a less energy consuming process and help make powerful spacecraft.

Even then, the companies have a lot to do in terms of testing and streamlining before we see them in their devices in the near future. Other companies like Intel are also considering new tech, like the upcoming RibbonFET design, which would succeed its FinFET technology.
