Samsung's Next Galaxy Watch Could Come With A Revolutionary Rollable Screen

Samsung is really aiming for futuristic tech supremacy! After mastering foldable screen tech with its range of Flip smartphones, new patents show Samsung's ambitious plans for its future smartwatches.

The Samsung patent (revealed first by LetsGoDigital and Peta Pixel) was filed with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) back in June.

A rollable screen on a smartwatch?

The future-ready smartphone patent shows a potential Galaxy Watch with a rollable screen with a camera in the centre. The watch's crown is the magic key, according to Samsung's patent filing.

Pressing the crown lets you extend the screen of this experimental Galaxy Watch - expanding the watch into a smartphone of its own, with a whopping 40 per cent larger surface area.

Samsung's endgame? It appears the Korean tech giant wants people to consume content like videos on their watches. The camera functionality too has been placed in the centre of the watch to reduce a user's dependency on their smartphones.

This could end the biggest critique of most smartwatches - that they are seen and developed as mere accompaniments to a smartphone. If Samsung's efforts bear fruits, the wearable segment could become independent tech in its own right.

Of course, right now it appears that adding a camera and a larger screen could be overkill. But most bright ideas (yes, including Samsung's foldable phones) were treated with a lot of scepticism before launch. Over time, the foldable screens have won most tech lovers over.

Perhaps this is the beginning of the end for smartphones as we understand them, especially with metaverse ambitions of various companies in the mix. We expect a lot of radical hardware designs and changes to appear over the next decade.
