Elon Musk's X (formerly known as Twitter) has challenged Karnataka High Court's ruling on content removal orders. A court decision found Twitter (now X) non-compliant with content removal orders and now, X claims that this decision could embolden the government to block more content on the social media platform.
In July 2022, X wanted to overturn government orders that sought removal of content from Twitter. In June 2023, the court dismissed that request and imposed a fine of Rs. 50 lakh on the platform.?X's recent 96 page-long filing says that if its appeal continues to face rejection, the government "will be emboldened to issue more blocking orders," Reuters reported.
In the filing, X also said that there must be "discernible parameters" to decide why an entire account is being blocked instead of a specific post, highlighting that it might give the government "power to censor future content" in an "untrammeled" manner.

The Indian government earlier asked X (or Twitter) to remove posts pertaining to tweets critical of the government's response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the farmers' protests, and accounts that supported an independent Sikh state.
When Elon Musk took over Twitter, he said that he intends to turn the platform into a place where free speech is of the highest importance. Recently, he rebranded Twitter as X, underlining his vision to create an everything app that works like China's WeChat.?On Friday, Elon Musk said that X has reached a "new high" in terms of users, with over 540 million monthly users.
