India is soon going to be hit with one of the deadliest cyclones to have ever seen in the Bay of Bengal.?
It is named Cyclone Amphan and currently, it is travelling from the bay towards coastal areas of West Bengal and Odisha.?
The super cyclonic storm situation, expected to have wind speeds of 230-240 kilometres per hour, gusting to 265 kilometres per hour, will remain till Tuesday evening, bringing heavy rainfall to coastal Odisha and West Bengal. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director-general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement to TOI, ¡°Amphan will cross West Bengal ¨C Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans on Wednesday as an ¡®extremely severe cyclonic storm¡¯ with maximum sustained wind speed of 165-175 kilometres per hour gusting to 195 kilometres per hour.¡±
He also stated that its extreme damaging impact would be felt in the east and west Medinipur, other districts such as Kolkata, Hoogli, Howrah and north & south 24 Parganas will also be severely affected due to windspeed of over 120 kilometres per hour and heavy rainfall.
IMD has also revealed that Amphan is expected to cause damage in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts on Wednesday with wind speeds reaching 55-65 kilometres per hour gusting to 75 kilometres per hour over Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Jajpur districts.
