Could you imagine the use value of a solar panel that's transparent? Windows may be turned into transparent window panels to keep electricity flowing through towns and cities.
Scientists have achieved a new efficiency record for dye-sensitised solar cells (DSCs) - opening avenues of transparent solar panels.
A team of scientists from ?cole Polytechnique F¨¦d¨¦rale de Lausanne in Switzerland may have just changed the game through their specially designed photosensitiser dye molecules. When combined, these molecules can harvest light from the entire visible light spectrum.
In essence, these transparent properties make the solar panels suitable for windows, greenhouses, and glass facades. They also think that they may be used in the screens of portable electronic devices.

These solar panels are also inexpensive and may be created using conventional roll-printing techniques, The Independent reported. The first dye-sensitised solar windows are already in use at the SwissTech Convention Center. Even then, they're not able to generate a lot of electricity due to lack of efficiency in comparison to traditional solar cells.
The power conversion efficiency stands between 28.4-30.2% for these transparent solar panels. In addition, the panels remain operationally stable over 500 hours of testing.

"Our findings pave the way for facile access to high performance DSCs and offer promising prospects for applications as power supply and battery replacement for low-power electronic devices that use ambient light as their energy source," the study's authors wrote. Their research was published in the journal Nature on Wednesday.
