Researchers from the University of Tokyo have now developed a robot that has been able to successfully peel a banana without smushing it -- a rather incredible feat in the field of robotics.??

Humans have the sense of touch where we can feel the feedback we receive while holding something, pulling or doing anything with our fingers. And this feedback tells us the kind of pressure we need to put to execute a task without destroying what we have in our hands. Robots don¡¯t get this feeling.
The robot was trained using machine learning to imitate a human and successfully peel the banana. The robot was able to do this with a pair of arms and hands with each hand getting two fingers that allowed them to grab objects with ease.?
For training the robot, a researcher peeled hundreds of bananas over the course of over 13 hours, to produce enough data for the robot to grasp and do it by itself. The process was split into nine stages including grabbing the banana, picking it off the table, holding its tip and the peeling pull.

After the training was completed, they tested this out on a pile of bananas. The bot was able to successfully peel a banana without destroying it with 57 percent accuracy. However, each successful attempt took around three minutes.?
Researchers are of the belief that with more training the tech behind the robot could be used for future tasks that need fine motor skills, and offer better, more efficient performance than humans.?
