Meteor showers are definitely one of the most beautiful occurrences in a dark sky, seeing the meteor fly swiftly as it disintegrates and shatters into the horizon.?
Nature¡¯s?fireworks are surely a sight to behold, however, most of these occurrences are rare and in case you¡¯re living in a city like Mumbai or Delhi where the air quality and visibility is terrible, catching a glimpse of this is even more difficult.
However, a ship travelling through the ocean near Australia has captured a meteor lighting up and disintegrating over the ocean in a beautiful and stunning video. You see a bright ball of fire fly through the dark sky and then disappear with a bang.
The ship that recorded this was actually a CSIRO research vessel dubbed Investigator, travelling off the coast of Tasmania and it aligned perfectly with the trajectory of the meteor while capturing the amazing moment through its live streaming cameras. The ship was around 62 miles off the coast, conducting a seafloor mapping project of the Huon Marine Park for Parks Australia.?
Voyage Manager of CSIRO RV Investigator, John Hooper, who was aboard the ship when it recorded this moment said in a statement, ¡°What we saw on reviewing the livestream footage astounded us, the size and brightness of the meteor was incredible. The meteor crosses the sky directly in front of the ship and then breaks up ¨C it was amazing to watch the footage and we were very fortunate that we captured it all on the ship livestream.¡±
Glen Nagle, from CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science, said how even though we think space is a dark abyss full of nothingness, it isn¡¯t really empty, ¡°Over 100 tonnes of natural space debris enters Earth's atmosphere every day. Most of it goes unseen as it occurs over an unpopulated area like the southern ocean.¡±
