K-pop star Sandara Park recently paid homage to the late Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, also known by her stage name Big S, citing her as one of her early inspirations. As a tribute, Park performed Ni Yao De Ai (The Love Your Want), a song from the original soundtrack of the popular Taiwanese drama series Meteor Garden, in which Hsu played the leading role. The heartfelt performance took place during a New Year's countdown party in Kaohsiung City.
Sandara Park took to X to express her condolences, writing, "Rest in peace, Barbie Hsu," in response to a post featuring her tribute performance. She also shared a heartfelt message, revealing that Hsu had been an inspiration to her since the beginning of her career.
Hsu rose to fame with her role as Sanchai in the critically acclaimed romance drama Meteor Garden, which was based on the Japanese manga Boys Over Flowers, which was released in 2001 but gained popularity across Asia in 2003 after it aired on ABS-CBN.
Meanwhile, Park, a former member of girl group N2E1, was starting her career around the same time in entertainment, with the Korean joining ABS-CBN reality talent show Star Circle Quest in 2004.
Barbie's mortal remains were brought home on February 5, but her family has decided not to hold a memorial service in her honour. The announcement was made by her younger sister, Dee Hsu, a well-known TV host.
In a press statement sent on February 5 via her manager, she said, ¡°Thank you to members of the media who have awaited Barbie's return in such cold weather. She has made it home safely. I believe she is happy and carefree in heaven now.
¡°We will not be holding a memorial service for Barbie since she always liked to keep a low profile. If you miss her, keep her in your heart. Our whole family thanks you for the love you have for Barbie.¡±
Barbie Hsu died from pneumonia at the age of 48 on February 2 during her trip to Japan. The actress had a history of health issues, including epilepsy and heart disease, which had led to her being hospitalized in the past due to seizures.
Despite her health challenges, she maintained a successful acting career, starring in numerous popular TV dramas such as Summer's Desire and Corner With Love. She also appeared in several films, including Reign of Assassins and Motorway.
