The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to resume the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) following a brief but tense suspension due to national security concerns over ongoing India-Pakistan tensions.
With a plan in motion and government cooperation underway, cricket fans may not have to wait much longer for the action to resume. Amid this, a new report has revealed that the IPL 2025 final may take place on May 30, instead of the scheduled date of May 25.
The tournament was formally suspended on May 9, shortly after the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala ended amid an unexpected blackout. This pause came in the wake of escalating India-Pakistan tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians. India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, a strategic military strike on nine terror camps across the border.
Although a temporary ceasefire was brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump on May 10, reports of violations from Pakistan have left the region on edge. Amid this uncertain situation, BCCI is coordinating closely with the Indian government to ensure the league¡¯s resumption aligns with national interests.
According to Indian Express journalist Devendra Pandey, the final is now likely to be held on May 30 instead of the originally planned May 25. This extension would allow the BCCI to accommodate the remaining matches, likely with limited venues and a few extra doubleheaders.
Cricbuzz reports, meanwhile, suggest the league could restart around May 14 or 15, with May 16 emerging as the most likely date. The BCCI is expected to circulate the updated schedule to all franchises soon, the report added.
In preparation for the restart, the BCCI has instructed all 10 IPL teams to report to their respective home bases by Tuesday. Franchises have also been directed to begin the process of recalling overseas players and coaching staff to India, despite ongoing diplomatic tensions.
ESPNcricinfo notes that logistical coordination is now a top priority, with player availability, travel safety, and venue security all under review.
While the BCCI¡¯s decision to resume IPL 2025 has been welcomed by many fans eager to see the tournament conclude, not everyone is on board. Several cricket enthusiasts took to social media to express concern over player workload and the timing of the revised schedule.
One fan wrote, ¡°Worst decision. There¡¯s an England tour coming up. The Indian Test team should be in England training by the end of May or start of June. What about the WTC?¡±
Others questioned the participation of overseas stars. ¡°Will South African and Aussie players even stay back? They¡¯ll have national duties soon,¡± another user pointed out.
There¡¯s also concern that players will have no time to rest before heading into the next international series, with some calling the post-final turnaround "unrealistic."
India is set to play a five-Test series against England starting June 20.?As for IPL 2025, a total of 16 matches remain, including four playoff fixtures, and the board will likely race against time to finish the tournament within a tight 12¨C14-day window.
