Dust off your Hawaiian shirts and grab a can of dog food¡ªCliff Booth is making a comeback. In a move no one had on their 2025 bingo card, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is officially getting a sequel, with none other than David Fincher taking over directing duties. And yes, Quentin Tarantino is still involved, writing the follow-up to his 2019 Oscar-winning film.
The sequel, currently untitled, is being developed at Netflix, where Fincher has a first-look deal. This marks a major shift for the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood universe, as the original film was released by Sony Pictures. However, Tarantino had negotiated ownership of the film¡¯s rights, which likely explains why this unexpected sequel is now in Fincher¡¯s hands.
The film reunites Pitt with Fincher, a duo responsible for some of cinema¡¯s most iconic moments in Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Whether Leonardo DiCaprio or Margot Robbie will return remains uncertain, but one thing is clear¡ªthis sequel is already a Hollywood fever dream. Oh, now that we are talking about it, there is also a slight possibility that?Leonardo DiCaprio might also return.
The news comes after Tarantino abruptly scrapped The Movie Critic, his planned tenth and supposedly final film. The script, which centred on a 1970s film critic for an adult magazine, had Brad Pitt attached in the lead role. There had been speculation that Pitt¡¯s character might have been a version of Cliff Booth, but now, Tarantino is making it official¡ªBooth¡¯s story is not over.
This sequel is also part of a fascinating cinematic crossover. Tarantino rarely hands over directorial duties, but he has previously written scripts for others, like True Romance and From Dusk Till Dawn. Meanwhile, Fincher has explored both the Hollywood industry (Mank) and violent lone wolves (The Killer), making him an intriguingly perfect choice to steer Booth¡¯s next chapter.
Netflix has yet to comment on the project, but one thing is certain¡ªHollywood¡¯s most laid-back stuntman is about to return, and under Fincher¡¯s direction, his story is bound to get even darker, weirder, and bloodier.
