On Sunday (Indian time), US President-elect Donald Trump chose his loyalist Kashyap 'Kash' Patel to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Patel became the second Indian American to be appointed to his cabinet. Taking to his Truth Social account, Trump stated: Indian-American Kash would work with our great Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to restore the FBI's fidelity, bravery, and integrity.
Indian-American Kash Patel temporarily worked in the Justice Department during the Obama administration. After Trump took office, he served as senior counsel to former Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., who led the House Intelligence Committee in 2017 and 2018, assisting with the committee's heavily criticized investigation into the FBI's Russia probe.?
In 2018, he moved from Trump's senior director for counterterrorism on the National Security Council to senior adviser to Trump's national intelligence directors before being promoted to chief of staff to acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller during Trump's final months in office.
Patel has openly discussed reprisal against Trump's political adversaries in government and the media, writing in his book, "[T]he FBI has become so thoroughly compromised that it will remain a threat to the people unless drastic measures are taken."?
Throughout his career, Patel has sparked controversy. In a previous interview, he stated that he would "come after" politicians and media deemed to be opponents of the then-president-elect. This statement, directed at Trump's perceived rivals, sparked debate about Patel's attitude to national?security.
