Emilia P谷rez star Karla Sof赤a Gasc車n has extended an apology amid the controversy surrounding her past social media activity. The backlash began on Thursday when her old posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, resurfaced, sparking widespread criticism and outrage. In a recently resurfaced tweet, she also lashed out at Emilia P谷rez?co-star Selena Gomez, calling her a 'rich rat,' and slamming her for her on-again, off-again relationship with Justin Bieber.
Amid social media backlash, Karla Sof赤a Gasc車n shared a lengthy, introspective response. She acknowledged the controversy and attempted to provide context and clarity regarding her past statements, which many had deemed offensive and insensitive.
She took to her Instagram account on Saturday to pen a lengthy note accompanied by a symbol of Nichiren Buddhism. The post, translated by Variety, read: "As with 'Emilia P谷rez': We can all do better. Me too."
Gasc車n began by acknowledging her past mistakes, writing "THEY ALREADY WON," and then offered a sincere apology to those who may have been hurt by her previous expressions.
She took responsibility for her actions, stating, "I have many things to learn in this world; the forms [in which I learn] are my biggest defect." Gasc車n also reflected on the importance of choosing the right words to convey her message, noting that even with the best of intentions, poorly chosen words can be misinterpreted.
She added, "Life has taught me something I never wanted to learn: it's clear to me that no matter how much my message is my message, without using the proper words, [the message] can convert into another."
The actress explained that she's grown as a person through her practice of Nichiren Buddhism. "I have gone from living a normal life to a life at the top of my profession in just six months; now my responsibility is very great because my voice not only belongs to me but to many people who feel represented and hopeful by or with me," she said.
Gasc車n denied being racist or extremist, stating, "I am not a racist... I have always fought for a more just society and for a world of freedom, peace,, and love."
She claimed that her words were taken out of context and that she's been unfairly judged, saying, "They have already won; they have achieved their objective, to stain my existence with lies or things taken out of context."
She concluded the statement with a poignant note sharing a quote from her mother, "I care very little whether you win anything; I just care about you being okay and that no one will harm you," to which Gasc車n responded, "Mother, this life has put me here to send a message of hope and love to this world; I will do it."
Gasc車n is facing intense scrutiny online after her tweet, allegedly from 2022, has resurfaced, in which she quote-tweeted a news story about the highly publicized feud between Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber.
The tweet reads, "She's a rich rat who plays the poor bastard whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife." Although the tweet does not mention Selena Gomez by name, the context suggests that she may be the subject of the comment.
In her recent statement, the Academy Award-nominated actress has denied belittling her co-star. While fabricated tweets are common online, especially when it comes to Selena Gomez, the alleged tweet seems to align with the Mexican actress' other alleged hate posts. Moreover, her deactivated account doesn't help clarify things.?
