It is now known to the world that over a billion animals have died in the?Australian Bushfires since September 2019. One of the worst-hit species is that of koala bears, as thousands of them perished in fire.?
The population of these cuddly bears is under threat, and volunteers and firefighters have been working tirelessly to heal those koalas back who have suffered burns and injuries in the fire.?
Even as there is one section of the society in Australia working towards saving the dwindling species, there have been reports that about 500 koalas could have been killed during a land clearing exercise at a bluegum plantation, near Portland in western Victoria.
MSN reports that the plantation had been harvested last year, but bulldozers have been present in recent weeks, clearing what¡¯s remaining of the trees and in the process, koala habitat.
In a video that is going viral - shot by a local - she can be heard saying, ¡°Look at the destruction they¡¯ve done. There¡¯s a koala lying there dead."
¡°Australia should be ashamed of this,¡± she further said.?
Measures should have been taken to first rehabilitate koalas of the area to some other place. It seems like a crime to have mercilessly taken away the habitat and lives of koalas - all this, after thousands of them already died in the fires.
