Global warming has been a concerning topic of discussion for a while now and things do not seem to be going well to reverse the effects. The United Nations issued a code red warning for humanity as the climate crisis is predicted to cause extreme weather on Earth in the next few years.
An example of climate change can be seen in Greenland as the island near the north pole received rain on Saturday. For the first time in recorded history, the summit received precipitation in the form of rain and not snow.?
This means that climate has changed the weather patterns due to rising temperatures in the cold region. According to a press release by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), the National Science Foundation's Summit Station had observed above-freezing temperatures and wet snow for the third time in less than a decade and the latest date in the year on record.?
The press release also said that there is no previous report of rainfall at the location. The location reaches 10,551 feet in elevation above sea level. The island has also lost ice mass due to the rain and it is supposed to be seven times higher than the daily average for this time of the year.?
The NSIDC also said that such melt events have taken place in 1995, 2012, and 2019.?
The Polar Portal released data that warned Greenland is on track to lose its vast ice sheets.?The region lost 8.5 billion tons of surface mass on August 3 and 8.4 billion tons on August 5.?
