A family in Uttar Pradesh organized a special "terahvin" in honor of their beloved rooster, who passed away while protecting his owner's newborn lamb from a stray dog.?The unusual incident was reported from the Pratapgarh district's Behdaul Kala village, which is under the jurisdiction of the Fatanpur police station.
Dr. Salkram Saroj, Lali's owner, stated that on July 7, the lamb was in his backyard while Lali was watching over the place.
"My family members were on the front side of the house when they heard some noise from the backyard. They rushed to the spot and saw that a street dog had entered the backyard," Saroj told TOI.
"As the dog attacked the lamb, Lali jumped to his rescue and started fighting with it. He chased away the dog, but till then, other dogs attacked Lali, injuring him severely," the owner added.
"We buried him near the house and performed all rituals which are usually performed after the death of a family member," Saroj's son Abhishek said. "While performing the rituals, my father proposed to perform terahvin, to which everyone in the family agreed," he added.?
According to a report, Laali's memorial feast was a magnificent affair.?
"The halwai (professional cooks) who did all the work has not yet taken any money from me. They said it was their good fortune that they could be part of a ceremony that was almost unbelievable", said Saroj as quoted in The Week.?
Laali had joined the family when he was one. They bought it from Asha Devi, a wandering seller.
"He was a rooster only in name. He had human sanskar (values)", said Saroj, 52, who has a medical practice in the village of Behdaul Kalan (Raniganj tehsil of Pratapgarh district).
While the family is still coming to grips with Laali's death, Saroj says he will never get another pet.
"It is just too painful to lose one. My Laali¡¯s Qurbani (sacrifice) will always be in our hearts", he said.
