There are a lot of ways a person could spend three days of their life ¨C go on a holiday, binge-watch Netflix or just sleep your way through.?
Mihir Vardhan, however, spent three days converting his Hyundai Santro into an electric vehicle (EV). It required not just endless hours in the garage/basement but also carefully piecing things to get everything working in tandem.?
Electric car conversions have been around for many years, but Mihir has developed an inexpensive EV that cost him just $3,000 (Rs 2.4 lakh).?
In the video, he explained how he converted his car into an EV. Mihir said that instead of removing the whole engine, he removed the top half called the cylinder head and also removed the pistons. He says leaving half the engine saves time, money and effort it would take to pull out the entire engine.?
He then makes an L-shaped motor mount and then fixes it atop the remaining engine block.?This technique, he says, gives the car power steering and air conditioning without any additional motors.?
According to Mihir, the converted car uses a single 6kW, 72V Brushless DC Electric motor (BLDC) connected to a 350A Kelly Controller. In the trunk, you will find the 72V 100Ah Lithium Ferrophosphate (LFP) battery.?
To retain power braking, he said you would require an electric brake booster vacuum pump. Since there was no?alternator in the car anymore, he used a 72-12V DC-DC converter to bring the 72V from the LFP battery in the back down to 12V to charge the lead acid battery to power the central locks, power windows, and the car's lights.?
He says while the performance of the conversion could benefit?from a larger motor and battery, the current specifications produce the perfect city car. It has a top speed of 60Km/h and a range of 80-90Km. And more importantly, the car costs you less than ?1/Km to run. That's as cheap as it comes.?
The video has created a buzz online and garnered tons of comments.?
"Congratulations Mihir This is fantastic! Often the most simple inventions as you describe your innovation are the most ingenious ones. It's a perfect answer to a new clean energy fuelled transport with great potential for the whole wide," a user commented.?
"Well done Mihir! Amazing work - environmentally friendly and budget friendly too! Love this and hope to see more cars running this way soon!" another user said.??
"It's crazy how you got power steering and AC with the same drive motor!" a third user said.?
