A woman who was in her final stage of pregnancy was travelling via a train. But imagine her worst nightmare coming true. She got into labour while travelling. Thankfully for her, she had a kind person to help her out with the entire process.?
A final-year medical student helped a pregnant woman deliver her baby?on board the Secunderabad-Visakhapatnam Duronto Express in the early hours of Tuesday. The medical student is from Gitam Medical College in Visakhapatnam.
The 28-year-old pregnant woman was travelling with her husband when she went into labour on the train itself.?
According to The New Indian Express, Dr Swathi Kesari, a house surgeon at Gitam Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMSR), was travelling on the same train when she got to about a pregnant woman in labour. She?was travelling on the same train from Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam.??
¡°It was 3:30 am and a man approached me to help his wife who was suffering from labour pain. He didn¡¯t know I was a doctor. With the help of two other women in the compartment and police on duty, the woman safely delivered a baby at 5:35 am,¡± Swathi said.
¡°Previously, I assisted my professors and fellow doctors during deliveries, but this was the first time I did it alone without any equipment. I was tense throughout the process, but felt happy after the safe delivery,¡± she said.
According to the doctor, the delivery was performed in the third AC compartment where she travelled.?
She told TOI, "Newborns should be kept in warm conditions. But it was an?AC bogie. Passengers gave their blankets wrapped to the child.?Many passengers helped a lot in performing delivery by converting?the compartment into a makeshift delivery room," she said.
After the said delivery, policemen arranged an ambulance at the Anakapalle railway station and shifted the woman and her newborn child to NTR Government Health Hospital.
After the delivery, Dr Swati accompanied the mother and her child to the hospital to check things were fine. She was the one who handed over the baby to the doctors.?Even though the delivery was premature, the baby girl and her mother are doing well.
