Siya Sarode, an Indian athlete who had her Schengen visa application denied at first--putting her participation in the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin in jeopardy--has won two gold medals in deadlift and squat.
According to the authorities, Siya was denied a German Schengen visa the first time she applied because she did not provide all of the required documentation, according to SchengenVisaInfo.com.?
Siya was refused because she needed to present a paper signed by her legal guardian together with the other documentation. She was unable to submit such a document on time because she does not have any of her parents and lives with her close relatives.
According to the Times of India, once the chief minister's office intervened, Siya was able to obtain her visa and travel to Berlin to compete in the World Games.?
She acquired the visa 24 hours before the start of the World Games, implying that her squad had already gone when she received the document.?
"We asked a coach to stay back and accompany her individually because the team had already gone for Berlin.?There was never any doubt that she would win medals and make all of us proud," said Victor Vaz, national sports director for Special Olympics Bharat.
This is not the first time that Indian athletes have encountered Schengen visa issues while travelling to the bloc for various tournaments. Nonetheless, as the authorities explain, visas are usually delayed because the processing time cannot be shortened due to the large volume of applications.?
Because India has not negotiated a visa-free travel agreement with the EU, all athletes, as well as other people, must obtain a visa in order to enter the Schengen Area.Athletes from India travelling to the EU to compete in sports must apply for a Schengen Visa for Cultural / Sports / Religious Events and Film Crews.
This type of visa allows for brief visits in the Schengen Area, and all candidates must provide a completed application form, two recent pictures, a valid passport, and a copy of their passport's data page.?
Applicants must additionally include a personal cover letter, a flight reservation, proof of having purchased travel health insurance, proof of lodging, proof of financial means, and proof of civil status when applying for this form of visa.
