In what is believed to be the world's first, a woman in US' Philadelphia gave birth in the front seat of a Tesla while it was operating on autopilot.?
Yiran Sherry, 33, was riding with her husband, Keating Sherry, 34, and three-year-old son Rafa when the remarkable delivery took place in September, The?Philadelphia Inquirer?reported.?
It was reported that?that Yiran's water broke while the family was stuck in traffic.?With contractions increasing rapidly and traffic barely moving, the couple realized they won't be able to make it to the hospital.?
Her husband then placed the vehicle on autopilot after setting the satellite navigation to the hospital which was 20 minutes away in the western suburb of Paoli.
He said he laid one hand gently on the car¡¯s steering wheel as he attended to his wife.??
¡°She was squeezing my hand to the point where I thought she was going to shatter it,¡± Sherry told? The Philadelphia Inquirer. ¡°I was [saying] ¡®Yiran, OK, focus on your breathing.¡¯ That was advice to myself, as well. My adrenaline was pumping.¡±
Yiran Sherry said the decision over whether to try to delay the birth until they reached the hospital was a difficult one. However, she?kept glancing at their estimated arrival time and noticed that it was barely changing
By the time the electric vehicle¡¯s autopilot mode had them at the hospital doors, Yiran had delivered her baby girl.
Yiran's umbilical cord was also cut in the Tesla¡¯s front seat, the couple said, with hospital staff afterwards referring to the newborn as the ¡°Tesla baby¡±.
The family were then escorted inside by medical staff.??
The couple named their daughter Maeve Lily, after briefly considering Tess, in tribute to the car manufacturer.
¡°Thank you genius Tesla engineers for your brilliant design of autopilot,¡± Keating Sherry said.
