Have you ever heard of digital pollution? In the era of the digital world, an average person spends hours every day in front of their mobile screens or other digital devices like tablets, computers, or televisions. Well, this can take a toll on your skin health.
The science behind it is the emission of blue light, a type of high-energy visible (HEV) light, which has become a subject of concern lately. On International Women's Day, let's understand why you must take a break from your digital screens and care for your skin health.
Digital pollution is real, and it can affect your skin a lot. ¡°Prolonged screen time and exposure to digital devices emit high-energy visible (HEV) light, also known as blue light, which can accelerate skin ageing. Digital pollution can lead to increased oxidative stress, inflammation, and damage to skin cells, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots,¡± explains Dr. Rashmi Sriram, consultant dermatologist, Fortis Hospital, Rajaji Nagar.
Protecting your skin from digital pollution is essential to maintaining a healthy and youthful complexion. Dr. Sriram says, ¡°The constant exposure to screens can also disrupt the body's natural circadian rhythms, affecting the skin's natural repair and regeneration processes.¡±
Digital pollution happens because of prolonged exposure to blue light from screens and environmental toxins, which is accelerating skin ageing in women. According to Dr. Shareefa Chause, dermatologist, Dr. Shareefa Skin Care Clinic, Mumbai, ¡°Various studies also confirm that blue light penetrates deeper than UV rays, inviting wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of skin elasticity. Constant screen exposure also weakens the skin barrier.¡±
Here are some anti-ageing tips?
¡°Women should use blue light-blocking sunscreens to protect the skin, use a gentle face cleanser, and take regular screen breaks,¡± says Dr. Chause.
