With several legal cases pending against her, YouTuber Sojang may experience some relief as her damages were reduced. IVE's Jang Won Young achieved a partial victory in her appeal against Sojang, with the court lowering the compensation amount.
On January 22, the 9th-3rd Civil Appeals Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judges Yoon Jae Nam, Seon Ui Jong, and Jeong Deok Su) ruled that the operator of the now-deleted YouTube channel Tal-deoksu-yong-so (YouTuber A) must pay 50 million won (approximately $39,000) in damages, halving the 100 million won awarded in the original trial.
The K-pop idol had filed the lawsuit in October 2023, claiming that YouTuber A had repeatedly posted videos spreading false information that harmed her reputation. The YouTuber was accused of defaming celebrities, including Jang Won Young, by uploading 23 false or defamatory videos between October 2021 and June 2023.
The YouTuber is said to have earned 250 million won in revenue over two years, part of which was used to purchase real estate. The channel has since been deleted.?
Additionally, Starship Entertainment, IVE's agency, has filed a separate damages lawsuit against YouTuber A, with the first trial still in progress.?
In addition to the civil cases, YouTuber A has been indicted for defaming Jang Won Young in a criminal case. In the first trial, they were sentenced to two years in prison with a three-year probation period. The prosecution has appealed the ruling, and the second trial is currently underway.?
After Jang Won Young, it seemed liked the many K-pop idols followed suit as BTS' V aka Kim Taehyung and Jungkook, ATEEZ's agency KQ Entertainment, and Kang Daniel all filed lawsuits.
Fans speculate that additional idols and agencies may take legal action, as Sojang has published videos about various idols, including NMIXX's Sullyoon, BTS' RM, actress Han So Hee, NCT's Jisung, Red Velvet, IVE, and aespa.
