Mahakumbh 2025 traffic: Millions of devotees are travelling to Prayagraj to take a holy dip at Mahakumbh 2025, one of the world's largest religious gatherings. However, extreme congestion on the roads leading to the city has caused a 300-km long traffic jam, leaving thousands of pilgrims stuck for hours. Some reports say that vehicles have been trapped for as long as 48 hours, with many struggling to cover even short distances.
Reports say that traffic on routes to Prayagraj has reached a severe level, with some pilgrims taking over 10-12 hours to travel just 50 km. Frustrated travellers have shared their experiences on social media, pointing out the lack of proper arrangements. Some are even calling it the "World's biggest traffic jam."
Police in Katni district have announced that traffic movement has been stopped until Monday. Maihar Police have told vehicles to turn back towards Katni and Jabalpur and wait there until conditions improve.
Officials said, "It is impossible to move towards Prayagraj today due to a 200-300 km traffic jam."
The effects of the Mahakumbh traffic jam are being felt in many places beyond Prayagraj. A huge number of vehicles, mainly from Maharashtra and southern states, are stuck in the Katni, Maihar, and Rewa districts. The large number of pilgrims trying to reach the city has led to massive traffic blocks.
As more and more people arrive, Prayagraj's main railway station has been temporarily closed to control overcrowding. Authorities have also decided to stop the general public from entering Prayagraj Sangam railway station, but train services are still running as usual.
Several videos on social media show long lines of cars and trucks stretching across the highways in Madhya Pradesh. Many internet users have called this the "biggest traffic jam in the world."
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over the massive Mahakumbh traffic congestion. He pointed out that stranded devotees are struggling without food, water, and proper toilet facilities.
"Due to traffic congestion in Prayagraj, essential supplies like food, vegetables, and medicines are not available. The condition of the hungry, thirsty, and tired devotees stuck on roads and inside the Mahakumbh premises is getting worse every hour. This is a very serious situation," Yadav posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The traffic jams are not just on the highways leading to Prayagraj; the congestion is also severe within the city. A 25-km long jam has been reported on roads connecting Varanasi, Lucknow, and Kanpur, while a 7-km-long queue of vehicles has been seen inside Prayagraj itself.
Due to the heavy crowds, Prayagraj Sangam railway station had to be temporarily shut down to prevent further chaos.
Even with the traffic issues, the religious enthusiasm remains high. Officials estimate that over 46 lakh devotees have taken a holy dip in the Sangam today alone. Since Mahakumbh 2025 began, nearly 44 crore pilgrims have participated in the sacred ritual, making it a historic event.

The 300-km long traffic jam at Mahakumbh 2025 has become a major issue for both devotees and authorities. While this grand event continues to attract millions, the huge congestion has caused frustration and worry. With traffic halted, railway stations packed, and supplies running low, authorities need to take quick action to control the situation and ensure a smoother experience for pilgrims.
