After Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is all set to conduct company-wide layoffs on Tuesday across multiple countries in the world. According to Reuters, the move comes as a part of its push to expand hiring for machine learning engineers.
The employees of the company received this information through the internal memos sent to them on Friday. The memo was authored by Meta's head of people, Janelle Gale, and it stated that notices, including those for employees in the US, were expected to be sent by Monday at 5 am as per their local time.?
According to Reuters, the spokesperson of Meta chose to not comment anything on the matter. However, last month, the company confirmed plans to cut down 5 per cent of its 'lowest performers,' while backfilling some of the positions.?
While the employees based out of Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will be exempted from the layoffs because of local regulations. On the other hand, dozens of employees from Europe, Asia, and Africa will receive their notification between February 11 and February 18, the memo read.?
According to Layoff.fyi, Meta is going to lay off over 3,000 employees, and this move has been acknowledged by CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself. He said that the company plans to 'raise the bar on performance' and remove the underperformers more quickly.
Moreover, in 2024 and 2025, Mark Zuckerberg has already cautioned that these years will be challenging for the company. Meanwhile, Meta continues to invest a big amount in artificial and metaverse initiatives as the layoffs highlight the rising pressure on the tech giants to remain profitable and efficient.?
In a separate memo released on Friday, PengFan, VP of Engineering for Monetisation, said the company has urged employees to accelerate the hiring process for machine learning engineers and other ¡°business critical¡± engineering positions.
