Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, welcomed his first baby boy on February 23 through a heartfelt post on X (formerly called Twitter).?
The OpenAI CEO shared an emotional post on Sunday, along with the picture of the newborn. Altman, who is married to a software engineer from Australia, Oliver Mulherin, revealed that their baby was born prematurely.?
However, the baby is currently under medical care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Despite this, the newborn is doing well, noted the 39-year-old CEO in his post.?
Altman took to his X account to share the piece of information, and wrote, ¡°Welcome to the world, little guy!¡±. Further, he shared an emotional picture of the baby holding an adult's finger, adding, ¡°He came early and is going to be in the NICU for a while."
Premature babies are the ones needing special care to ensure their favourable growth. ¡°After birth, premature babies should stay in incubators with warmth, preferably cuddling mothers for skin-to-skin contact or kangaroo care, to maintain normal body temperature. Every possible measure must be taken to maintain strict hygiene so that the babies do not get infections,¡± says Dr. Shweta Mendiratta, Associate Director-Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Marengo Asia Hospital, Faridabad.
Breast milk will be a good feed for the babies, but when not available, formula-fed is preferred by a physician. ¡°Watch out for their breathing. In case there are irregularities, medical attention is required. Pediatric check-ups and vaccinations on time are very important. They need to be in a calm atmosphere, free from loud noise, conducive to their neurological development,¡± adds Dr. Mendiratta.
IVF and surrogacy increase the risks of multiple pregnancies and, thus, the chances of premature births. According to Dr.Puneet Rana, IVF Expert-CIFAR Centre Gurgaon, ¡°IVF or other assisted reproductive techniques can cause implantation problems or placental abnormalities that result in the premature delivery of a baby. Surrogates and biological mothers too may have other health conditions, lower obstetrical risks, and neonatal morbidities.¡±
Premature babies through IVF or surrogacy may result in babies having poorly developed organs, respiratory distress, or low birth weight, and initiation into neonatal intensive care is often needed. ¡°Proper and constant supervision by a medical professional, along with a preference for single embryo transfer, if at all possible, and a supportive environment for a healthy pregnancy can minimize the risks,¡± he adds.
