Donations and monetary offerings to God are not uncommon in India. People often offer generous offerings to deities believing that they will make the lord happy and be blessed. One of the richest temples in India is the famous Shirdi Saibaba temple in Maharashtra which receives the largest donations in India.
Starting before Christmas and ending on the New Year day (December 22 - January 1), the temple received donations worth Rs 14.54 crore, an official said. The devotees from the country as well as abroad donated Rs 8.05 crore in the donation boxes, Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust's vice chairman Chandrashekhar Kadam told reporters on January 2.
The temple trust also received Rs 6 crore through online donations, debit/credit cards, cheques, demand drafts and donation counters, he added. Gold and silver items worth Rs 19 lakh were also donated.
It¡¯s not just India, devotees from 19 countries including the USA, the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan and China donates foreign currencies worth Rs 30.63 lakh. Apart from these the temple trust also earned Rs 3.62 crore through paid passes that were issued to the visitors and the online darshan facility provided by the temple management, Mr Kadam said.
Nearly 9.5 lakh devotees from different parts of the country also visited Saibaba temple during the 11-day period.
