A 17-year-old London student won a silver medal for Team India at the European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI) in the Netherlands, where the Indian squad had its best-ever result with two bronze medals and one honourable mention.?
Aanya Goyal, a student at Alleyn's School in Dulwich, competed against top coders from 50 nations in the prestigious worldwide competition for young women interested in computer science, which culminated this weekend in Veldhoven.
The mathematics fanatic applied her problem-solving approach to devise novel answers to a series of tasks set for the teams. "I feel very proud to have won a silver medal for India at the Girls' Olympiad in Informatics at a time when competitive programming is emerging as one of the most popular sports all over the world, but especially in India," Goyal told reporters.?
"The event consisted of two five-hour sessions in which we were given four issues to answer, each with multiple subtasks. The issues involve complicated algorithmic design and code implementation concerns. Five hours goes by quickly and is not enough time," she explained.
According to the EGOI guidelines, the implemented code must complete a collection of sub-tasks in two to four seconds. This means that participants must be extremely proficient in mathematics as well as innovative in issue design and solutions in order to offer super-efficient coding at an incredible speed.?
