After woman's photos are used in fake profile on Bharat Matrimony, company responds: 'Industry-wide issue'

Bharat Matrimony, a well-known matrimonial platform in India, recently found itself under scrutiny after a woman named Swati Mukund accused the company of using her face in a fake profile. The profile also misleadingly suggested that she had found her partner through the site, which was not true. After Swati called attention to the platform's inadequate profile screening, Bharat Matrimony has now issued a response about how it really happened.

BharatMatrimony CEO Murugavel Janakiraman explained, in a statement to NDTV, that the controversial profile was mistakenly thought to have been created on EliteMatrimony, their exclusive matchmaking service. In reality, it was created on another platform within the BharatMatrimony network.

Janakiraman further clarified that BharatMatrimony allows third parties—such as parents or relatives—to set up profiles on behalf of others, which accounts for around 25% of their users.?

While this feature is meant to support families in the matchmaking process, it can sometimes lead to misuse, such as the use of public images in fake profiles.?

He acknowledged that this is a common problem across the entire industry, adding, "There isn't a foolproof way to completely prevent it."

What happened in the BharatMatrimony fake profile incident?

In a video shared on Instagram on October 30, Swati Mukund accused Bharat Matrimony of using her photos on a profile she never created and for falsely claiming that she had met her husband through the app.

The profile belonged to someone named Nithya Raja Sekar from Chennai.

Mukund pointed out that this profile was part of Bharat Matrimony's premium subscription service, which promises better screening and higher authenticity for paying users.

She ended by warning user to stay vigilant when using such platforms.

Bharat Matrimony had already issued a response to the post: "We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. We have suspended this profile and conducting a thorough investigation on how it got published."
