Blood donation is a noble cause and people in a village in Karnataka totally understand the importance of this gesture.?
This village by the name of Akki Aluru is known as the?¡®The Hometown of Blood Donors¡¯. The title has been provided to this town by none other than Google.?This village is in Hanagal taluk of Haveri district, Karnataka and it is popular for its blood donors.
The village is famous only because more than 600 villagers have registered for blood donation here and are donating blood regularly.
This initiative was started by?Karibasappa Gondi, a police constable in the Akki Aluru police station back in the year 2015. Snehamytri Raktadaani Balaga is an army of these people who have made sure to donate blood religiously.
According to the First Post, this team has made over 21,000 blood donations since the year 2015.?¡®¡®We call ourselves as blood soldiers. We have organized blood donation camps in around 19 villages until now. I have 5100 blood donors names with their blood groups saved on my phone. So I arrange donations whenever needed. I myself have donated blood 52 times until now¡± says a proud Raktha Sainika (Blood Soldier) Karibasappa Gondi.
This team of people are extremely dedicated and go the extra mile to save someone's life. They have even travelled to far off places to save lives in times of emergency. A few have even travelled to Goa at times.
The team has an NWRTC bus called ¡®Rakthadaana Ratha¡¯ which means the chariot of blood donation. The bus provides information on blood donors and awareness on blood donation.
Apparently, there are over 23 children who are suffering from?Thalassemia (an inherited blood disorder that causes your body to have less haemoglobin than normal) in the neighbouring villages. This team of people supply blood to these children between the age of 3-12 years old regularly.?The patients have never struggled to find a donor with a whole team helping them from the neighbourhood.
Other than donating blood themselves, the residents of the village also organize several programs creating awareness on blood donation at various places. Every child in Akki Aluru is aware of blood donation and its benefits. Hence the village is very aptly called the Hometown of Blood donors.???
A noble cause indeed.
