In an Instagram post, wildlife veterinarian Dr Chloe Buiting demonstrated a novel usage of the Apple Watch for monitoring lions' heart rates.
The viral video shows a drugged lion reclining with an Apple Watch delicately placed on its tongue, showcasing the watch's capacity to monitor the lion's vital signs. The screen of the watch shows real-time health metrics.

¡°I don¡¯t know what¡¯s more impressive¡ the snore, or the discovery that the @apple Watch can measure a lion¡¯s heart rate if you strap it to the tongue (even if it is one of the less conventional ¡°off-label¡± uses for the device ). Either way, it¡¯s a true ¡®technology meets conservation¡¯ story,¡± Dr Chloe wrote in the caption.
Dr Chloe described how she and her colleagues, Dr Fabiola Quesada and Dr Brendan Tindall, discovered the trick of using the Apple Watch to monitor wildlife health.?
In her piece, she discussed the difficulties of monitoring anaesthesia in the field. She mentioned that many instruments are meant for smaller animals, making it even more difficult to obtain accurate measurements.?
Dr Chole described the usage of the Apple Watch for animals as a "game-changer," revealing that the watch works not only on lions but also on elephants when strapped to their ears.?
