A bride has wowed internet viewers with her Instagram video of a zero-waste wedding ceremony. The movie provides a glimpse into her wedding festivities, displaying thorough attention to every detail, resulting in minimal waste from decorations to food.
Dr Poorvi Bhat went viral for a zero-waste sustainable wedding on Instagram.?
In her Instagram post, she wrote, ¡°I do not know if this is what experts would consider a zero-waste wedding but we did not generate any plastic at the event and did everything we could to minimise our footprint. It was only because of the cooperation of our families that my dream of a zero-waste wedding was possible. My mother was the genius behind it all, she planned and organised the whole event and it was very fulfilling for me that our union happened the way it did.¡±?
The inventive measures implemented throughout the ceremony were nothing short of remarkable. Guests were presented with gifts in jute bags, a sustainable alternative to typical packaging.?
The water used to wash hands was intentionally aimed at trees, allowing it to replenish the surrounding environment. The centrepiece of the wedding, the 'mantapa' or wedding enclosure, was made of sugarcane stems, a renewable resource that served dual use.?
Following the celebrations, the sugarcane structure was repurposed as cow feed, resulting in minimum waste.
Disposable cups and plates were conspicuously absent from the festivities, replaced by traditional banana leaf plates and robust steel glasses. Even the d¨¦cor reflected the zero-waste approach, with mango and coconut tree stems, leaves, and twigs used for their low water impact.?
To address any trash generated during the event, a composting system was installed on the farm where the wedding was held, ensuring that even the smallest residues were recycled into beneficial compost for later use.
Bhat's idea has prompted considerable praise and discussion on social media, with many praising her commitment to environmental sustainability and asking for similar practices in weddings around the world. One person commented, "This is how Indian weddings were supposed to be culturally."?
A second user said, "Oh mannnn, normalise this!" A third person commented: "This is exactly how I want mine to be. "You are an icon." Check the viral video here.
