Dubai, like the rest of the UAE, has a hot, dry climate. As a result, rainfall is infrequent, and the infrastructure is inadequate to deal with extreme storms. However, that changed on Tuesday.?
A year's worth of rain caused massive flash flooding in Dubai Tuesday, with roads turning into rivers and rushing water inundating houses and businesses.?
Shocking video showed the tarmac of Dubai International Airport, recently voted the world's second-busiest airport, submerged as large aircraft attempted to navigate flooding.?
Large aircraft moved through the flooded airport like boats, spraying water in their wake and causing waves to vibrate in the deep water. On Tuesday, the airport suspended operations for over a half hour.

"Operations continue to be significantly disrupted," the airport said in an advisory. "There is major flooding on access roads around Dubai leading to the airport."
According to weather readings at the airport, about 4 inches (100 mm) of rain fell in just 12 hours on Tuesday, which is roughly equivalent to what Dubai receives in a year, according to United Nations figures.?
The rain fell so heavily and swiftly that several drivers were forced to leave their vehicles as floodwaters rose and roadways transformed into rivers.Water rushed through a mall and flooded the ground floor of homes, according to social media videos.

Torrential rainstorm events like this will become increasingly often owing to human-caused climate change. As the atmosphere warms, it may absorb more moisture like a towel before releasing it in the form of more intense gushes of flooding rain.?
