A 20-year-old Indian-origin student was mercilessly killed in his dormitory in the US state of Indiana. According to media reports, his Korean roommate was taken into custody following his death.
Korean student who allegedly killed his Indian-origin roommate in their dorm at the renowned Purdue University said ?"very sorry" for the death of his friend but alleged he had been "blackmailed."
Last Wednesday, the body of Indianapolis native Varun Manish Chheda, 20, was discovered in McCutcheon Hall on the western edge of the campus.
A junior cybersecurity major from Korea named Ji Min "Jimmy" Sha was arrested for the homicide.?
"I was blackmailed," the suspect said when asked about a motive for the crime. He did not elaborate, as WLFI, a television station in Indiana, reported.
When asked if he had anything to say to the victim¡¯s family, Sha replied: "I am very sorry."
Last week, Sha appeared to mutter, "I love my family," as he was hauled to jail for allegedly killing Chheda, a senior data science major who the Tippecanoe County coroner said died of "multiple sharp-force traumatic injuries."
At around 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Sha called the police to report that he had fatally stabbed his roommate in their McCutcheon Hall room.
According to the outlet, police discovered Chheda sitting in a chair and Sha covered in what seemed to be blood. A pool of blood, a folding knife, and what appeared to be blood splatters on the wall and floor were also visible.
Chheda¡¯s friends had said they had been gaming with the victim when they suddenly heard him screaming.
Indiana police described the crime as an "unprovoked and senseless" murder.
