Mandeep Kaur, a 30-year-old New Yorker of Indian descent, died by suicide on August 3 after allegedly suffering domestic abuse from her husband, Ranjodhbeer Singh Sandhu, for almost eight years.
Mandeep's family reportedly hails from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh, while the husband and daughters live in Richmond Hill, New York.
The horrific news of Mandeep's death surfaced on the internet after the Instagram page @TheKaurMovement shared the lengthy account of the abuse she faced.
In a video released by @TheKaurMovement, Kaur spoke about the abuse and violence she suffered while married. She exposed her blood clots, bruises, and evidence of the abuse her in-laws had condoned.
In one of the videos, which is available online, Mandeep is seen saying:?
"I am really very sad. It has been eight years. I have tried my best. I was beaten up every day. I have been suffering him and his beatings, thinking he will improve someday. But no, he beat me up for eight years. Had extra-marital affairs. We lived there (in India) for the first two and a half years, and it was hell."
Sharing details of the abuse, Mandeep had said,?
"Then we came here. He would get drunk and beat me up. Sometimes he would beat me even without being drunk. He would beat me and, on top of that, be with other women. I tried to put up with it for my children,"?
"My father registered a police case. Then he started begging, saying, 'save me, save me.' I saved him. I tried to set everything right. But my in-laws didn't do anything to help me. God will show everyone. I won't say anything. God will punish everyone. You all ganged up and left me helpless. I have to leave my kids and go now," Kaur said in a video.
Another video that has appeared online purports to show Sandhu forcing the victim onto a bed and choking her while she calls out for help. In the video, Kaur says ¨C "I refuse to take this anymore."
Mandeep's story has struck a chord with Indians all over the globe. Here is how people are demanding justice for Mandeep.
The New York Police Department is looking into the matter as a homicide rather than a suicide.
