The tragic death of 34-year-old Atul Subhash, who took his own life after leaving behind a 24-page note and an 81-minute video accusing his wife of harassment, has sent the nation into shock, with many rallying behind Subhash and criticising the biased nature of the Indian legal system against men. But, how exactly did his wife allegedly harass him and what are the cases she filed against him?
Nikita Singhania, the estranged wife of Atul Subhash, filed an FIR on April 24, 2022, at Jaunpur Kotwali, accusing Atul, his parents Anju Devi and Pawan Modi, and his younger brother Bikas of dowry harassment and violations of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
According to the FIR, after their marriage on April 26, 2019, in Varanasi, Atul's family allegedly demanded a dowry of Rs 10 lakh.?
The complaint also stated that on August 16, 2019, Atul's parents made another demand for Rs 10 lakh, which supposedly led to the sudden death of Nikita's father the following day.
On May 17, 2021, Nikita further accused Atul of assaulting her and her mother, after which she returned to her parental home.
In his suicide note, Atul dismissed any connection between the dowry demand and her father's death, stating that her father had been ill for a long time, receiving treatment at AIIMS Delhi before passing away in a local hospital.
Atul explained that he and Nikita had met through a matrimonial site and that she stayed with his family in Samastipur, Bihar, for just two days before moving to Bengaluru.?
According to a report from TOI, Nikita's house in the Khoya Mandi area of Jaunpur was found locked late Wednesday night.?
However, Nikita's paternal uncle, Sushil Singhania, stated, "Neither I nor any family member was at the scene. Nikita will address the claims made in the video soon."?
He added that the family had not been in contact with Atul for the past three years and expressed confidence in the judicial process. "We are not guilty, and we trust the court to deliver a fair judgment," he said.
Earlier, a video showed Nikita's mother and brother at their house, where they had a heated exchange with the media, asking them to stop filming. They assured they would respond to all questions in due time.
