When Audrey, a baby girl who broke a 138-year tradition of only having boys born in the family, was born in March, Carolyn and Andrew Clark of Michigan were overjoyed. Here's their story.?
When Carolyn first learned that there hadn't been a girl born on her husband's side since 1885, she told Good Morning America that she was astounded. She remembers asking Andrew, "What do you mean?'" after they started dating more than ten years ago, pointing out that "it's a 50-50 chance" with each baby born. "No, genuinely, we haven't had a girl in our direct line in more than a century, he responds.
Carolyn told GMA that Andrew's parents confirmed the startling statistic for her. "Oh yeah, no, we haven't had a girl in our direct line," they say. There have been girls in his lineage through his uncles and cousins, but not himself.?
When the couple started trying for a second child, they already had a son, 4-year-old Cameron, and Carolyn told WZZM 13 in an interview that they were hoping for a girl. The couple found out that Carolyn was pregnant again after two miscarriages.?
At that point, she admitted to GMA, "We honestly didn't care if we were having a boy or girl." We simply expressed our gratitude for the pregnancy and prayed for a healthy pregnancy and unborn child.
When everyone was served special cookies that had been baked with either pink or blue frosting at a gender reveal party in September, the Clarks and their family and friends learned together that a girl was on the way.?
According to Andrew, "We kept it a secret to ourselves as well." Therefore, I simply assumed that the cookies' centres would be blue.Following a countdown, Andrew, Carolyn, and their visitors all simultaneously bit into a cookie and discovered pink inside. Carolyn told WZZM 13 that "everyone was just screaming and jumping in in shock."
Carolyn told GMA that the turn of events was "icing on the cake" in terms of ending the 138-year streak of boys in the Clark family. We're overjoyed that she's finally here, that she's healthy, and that the delivery process went smoothly, Carolyn continued.?
