Navratri is almost here, and one of the most important rites of this nine-day festival is Kalash Sthapna (or Ghatasthapana)! The ceremony of placing the Kalash (holy pot) in front of Maa Durga is more than just symbolic; it is a way to ask Maa Durga for her blessings into your home. Make sure to get your Navratri puja saamagri (ingredients) before the first day!
With nine days and nights of Goddess worship in full swing, here's a quick and easy guide to ace your Kalash Sthapna prep like a pro!
First of all, locate a wooden plank on a suitable location for the Goddess Durga idol. Before placing the idol, clean the area and lay down a bright red cloth. Pro tip: place the Kalash in the northeast direction (also known as the Ishan corner) because it is associated with water, which attracts all the positive energy and purifying energies!
Next, apply mud on the board and sprinkle it with water. Drop in nine different grains¡ªit's all about the symbolism! Now collect your copper or brass Kalash, and don't forget to rub it with haldi and kumkum for extra prosperity.
It's time to fill up the Kalash! You can use Ganga jal, cash, grains, stones, or gold¡ªwhatever feels appropriate. Add supari, akshat (raw rice with turmeric), and Durva grass for a spiritual boost. After that, place a coconut on top of the Kalash, wrap it with a fresh red cloth, and add a garland to finish the placement of the kalash. (and don't let it slide!).
Place the Kalash on the board, which we decorated in the beginning, sprinkle with water everyday, and keep the devotion going with your puja thali in hand. Oh, and remember to repeat those Vedic mantras so that Maa Durga can feel you are spiritually empowered energy.?
Mark your calendars as Shardiya Navratri begins on October 3, 2024 (Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha, Ashwina month) and ends with Dussehra on October 12, 2024 (Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha).
So go ahead and prepare for the puja, garba, and all things festive!
