Optical illusions have gained significant popularity, and now we see new mind-bogglers taking over the internet nearly every week.
Over the past few months, we have come across many?optical illusions?that have left us scratching our heads. Today, we have another brain teaser to leave you in a spin.?
Super Mario might be a kid¡¯s cartoon, however, this illusion involving the Nintendo star can apparently only be solved by the smartest people. The image has been blowing people's minds ever since it went viral three years ago.? ?
¡°Is Mario going up or downstairs?¡± reads the caption on Reddit.? ?
In the photo, Super Mario is walking on a staircase, but because of the way it's drawn, people can¡¯t agree on whether he is going up or down them.??
The optical illusion is not constructed but in fact, is a screengrab from an?episode of?The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!?from 1989.?Needless to say, the mind-melting image has left people baffled.?
¡°Looks more down than up.¡± a user commented.?¡°He is going up. Look at his left foot. It gives it away.¡± another user said.¡°Historically, that would be downstairs. Castles were built for defence, so the defenders would be given as many advantages as possible," a user explained.?"I'm losing my s**t over this. Which way are these stairs going?" another added.?
Finally, a social media user solved the mystery by finding the exact episode this image was taken from. And it turns out, Mario was running up the stairs.? ?
The?brain teaser is similar to the famous Shroeder¡¯s staircase,?in an iconic drawing that twists and turns to seem like it's working from both sides. There is an object placed on the staircase and people can't tell which direction it is travelling in.?
Called the?3D Schr?der Staircase, the illusion will leave your head hurting.?
In its traditional 2D illustration, a staircase is seen from above. The image is then rotated and it turns out to be two staircases (the other seen from below).??
In the 3D version of the?illusion, created by Japanese?mathematician?Kokichi Sugihara,?an object is placed on the staircase.?Initially, the object appears to be at the top of the stairs.?But then the interpretation switches when the object is rotated by 180 degrees.
The object, which looks like it is stationed on the top step,?suddenly appears as if it's on the bottom step. Please, don't do this to us!?If that wasn't mind-boggling already, wait for the part in the video where the artist reveals a side view of the staircase.
The creation received the 2020?Illusion?of the Year award?in the Best Illusion of the Year Contest.? ??
