An entire Spanish village with 44 houses has gone on sale for $259,000 (Rs 2 crore)¡ªthe same price as a one-bedroom apartment in Madrid.??
Salto de Castro, an abandoned village in north-western Spain, is on the market after the owner declared he is an urban dweller and could not maintain its upkeep.
In addition to 44?homes, the village, which is three hours' drive from Madrid, has its own bar, school, church, hostel, swimming pool, and sports courts.
Located in?Zamora province, near the?Portugal?border, Salto de Castro sits on a hilltop looking out over the Arribes del Duero natural park.
The village was reportedly also home to an old barracks that used to house the Civil Guard, as per the listing on the Spanish real estate website Idealista.??
Despite its amenities, no one has lived in the Spanish village since its inhabitants left more than 30 years ago.
The village was built in the 1950s by an electricity generation company to house the families of workers at the dam nearby, but was totally abandoned in the 1980s.
Salto de Castro was purchased by the current owner back at the turn of the millennium with the intention of turning it into a?tourist destination.
The village was previously on sale for more than ?5 million, but as no buyers came forward, the price has nosedived.
While the asking price would only buy a one-bedroom apartment in Madrid and so may seem like an unbelievable deal, there's one catch. The investment required in order to renovate the village and turn it into a tourist spot will cost €2 million.
