Spanish Bar Sparks Outrage After Charging Customers Every Time A Waiter Serves Them

They say nothing in life is free, but a Spanish bar seems to have taken things to a whole new level. The Imperial Bar is going viral for all the wrong reasons - after charging customers for each time a waiter visited their table.

Blas Galey Hermoso, from Andalucia, was left stunned when he received the bill, which showed an additional charge of 20 cents (17p) every time the waiter went to his table. If that wasn't bizarre enough, there is also an extra Euro (Rs 81) for the use of cutlery.

The Imperial Bar in Zamora, Spain, added the surcharges to the Hermoso's bill without his prior knowledge.

The bizarre incident took place last year, with the restaurant claiming the extra charge was for every drink that was served rather than every time the waiter went to the table.

While it is standard practice in many European countries to have a cover charge to drink on a terrace, Hermoso, however, was baffled when he was charged an extra 20 cents for every single time the waiter brought items to the table. There were additional charges for cutlery, too.

Taking to Twitter, the baffled customer shared a picture of his bar bill.

"Something strange happened to us a few days ago in Benavente. Every time the waiter came to the terrace table to bring something: beer, the tapa... he charged us 20 cents. The last straw was the euro that he charged us to put some cutlery to cut a toast that we had ordered," he wrote.

While many Twitter users were on his side, others said they felt the extra 20 cents was not a ridiculous charge.

"The supplement on the terrace is normal but I freak out with the cutlery thing," one user commented.

"Charging €4.5 for a beer can be expensive, or cheap, depending on other factors, but charging for each time the waiter goes out to the terrace or for a cutlery is directly illegal,' another user said.

"One solution would be to tell the waiter not to bring me the order in small drops, bring me the entire order at once, that way they would only charge 20 cents. Although the perfect solution would be to NEVER GO TO THAT RESTAURANT," a third user commented.

According to Spanish News Today, the bar defended its position, claiming that it was common practice to charge an extra fee for service away from the bar.
