A person's presence of mind and even a little courage can save them from many unpleasant situations, as a guy recently demonstrated in the United Kingdom. Here's what happened.?
A courageous shopkeeper in Durham City prevented a knifepoint robbery by trapping the burglar under the store's roller shutters.?
According to a Durham Constabulary announcement, Malcolm Trimble entered a Durham City store last month with a kitchen knife concealed in his sleeve, picked up a four-pack of lager, and then threatened the owner.
But he hadn't factored on the shopkeeper's quick thinking - he dashed from behind the counter, escaped the premises, held the door locked to keep the burglar inside, and then calmly activated the system to lower the shop's metal roller shutters from outside.
Trimble tried physical force to open the door and after finally forcing the shopkeeper to release his grip on the handle, attempted an Indiana Jones-style slide to escape the dropping shutters.?
Unfortunately for him, his erroneous slide resulted in him being trapped under the metal shutters, his head inside the shop and his torso outside, where the intended victim was quietly contacting police.?
Trimble consoled himself after a brief but ultimately failed attempt to squirm away by reaching for one last can of lager to sip during his final minutes of freedom.
Officers arrived three minutes after receiving the 999 call to discover the guy laying in the street, his head inside the business. They quickly removed the shutters and arrested him.?
Trimble, 30, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison yesterday at Durham Crown Court after admitting to attempted robbery and possessing a weapon."It wasn't the most difficult arrest we've ever made," Durham Constabulary Detective Sergeant Paul Mawson said. To be honest, it was a simple matter."?
