As Russian soldiers are invading their neighbours, Ukrainians are aggressively defending their nation. Among several reports of Ukrainian bravery is this one incident that happened on an island in the Black Sea where soldiers defended their soil after a Russian navy warship attacked them.
The Ukrainian soldiers died defending their country and telling them the Russian navy warship to "go fuck yourself" when ordered to surrender. It is heartbreaking to know that the 13 border guards lost their lives, and an audio of the incident has surfaced on social media.?
According to a report by The Guardian, there were 13 border guards stationed on Snake Island - a roughly 16-hectare rocky island owned by Ukraine that is located about 300 km west of Crimea, when Russian troops bombed the island.
After the soldiers refused to surrender, they were martyred, Ukrainian officials said in a statement.?
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced he would posthumously award all of the soldiers the Hero of Ukraine award.
¡°All border guards died heroically but did not give up,¡± Zelenskiy said.
The audio seems to have captured the final exchange between the Ukrainian border guards on Snake Island with an approaching Russian navy vessel. The audio says that a Russian officer told the Ukrainian forces on the island to "lay down your weapons".
¡°This is a military warship. This is a Russian military warship. I suggest you lay down your weapons and surrender to avoid bloodshed and needless casualties. Otherwise, you will be bombed,¡± the Russian office was recorded as saying on a naval radio channel.
A Ukrainian officer can be heard murmuring "Well, this is it. Should I tell him to go fuck himself?"
Then, he reportedly said,?¡°Russian warship, go fuck yourself.¡±
The audio was shared on social media by Anton?Herashchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry.
The report further adds that the Russian navy bombarded the island with deck guns before sending soldiers on board to infiltrate the Ukrainian land.?
Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island in Ukrainian, is located near the Ukrainian and Romanian coasts along the Black Sea. It has previously been the subject of a territorial dispute between Russia and Ukraine.?
