Will Smith stormed the stage at the 94th Academy Awards and smacked Chris Rock across the face for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith over two years ago, and we're all wondering if he'll be there this year.
Will Smith enjoyed a spectacular victory at the 2022 Oscars, winning Best Actor for his depiction of Richard Williams, the dedicated father of tennis icons Venus and Serena, in 'King Richard', which continues to stand out today as a brilliant example of film brilliance.?
However, Smith's biggest triumph was preceded by an episode that dominated pop cultural circles for what seemed like a lifetime.During his presentation of the Oscar for Best Documentary, which went to 'Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised),' comedian Chris Rock opted to lighten the mood with some audience banter.?
However, things took a quick turn when he cracked a less-than-wise joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, comparing her to G.I. Jane because of her alopecia-related hair loss. In a stunning moment, Smith stormed the stage and administered a powerful slap across Rock's face. Ouch!?
However, the next day, he rushed to social media to publicly apologize to Rock and the AMPAS. Despite this gesture, Smith decided to resign from his AMPAS membership on April 1, potentially avoiding suspension and expulsion.?
As a result, he risked a decade-long ban from attending AMPAS-related events.?
"The board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards," a statement read.??
Despite missing AMPAS activities, Smith is eligible for an Academy Award nomination. However, given the circumstances he faced two years ago, the chances of him acquiring one anytime soon appear small.
