Artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed industries around the world, making ordinary processes more efficient and freeing up vital time for more important pursuits.?
When a concerned mother resorted to ChatGPT for a diagnosis of her four-year-old child, who had been suffering from a recurring toothache and limited growth, the influence of AI reached new heights. Here's what we know.
The young boy, Alex, and his mother, Courtney, had endured a three-year medical mystery including extreme pain and unexpected symptoms. "I have to give him Motrin (a pain reliever) every day, or he has these gigantic meltdowns," Courtney said of the struggle. He was perfectly well if he took Motrin."
During the height of the COVID-19 outbreak, Alex began biting on items, giving him discomfort and leading his mother to seek medical attention. Despite multiple doctor visits and even an emergency room visit, the cause of Alex's pain remained unknown.?
According to today.com, Courtney's quest to discover answers drove her to spend restless nights searching for medical information online.
As if the toothache wasn't enough, Alex's growth rate had halted, causing even more concern. A doctor speculated that it could be a side effect of COVID-19, but the matter was not resolved.?
Courtney was frustrated after visiting 17 doctors without receiving a final diagnosis, so she went to an odd source: ChatGPT. She told the AI tool about Alex's symptoms, hoping for a cure. ChatGPT, to her surprise, suggested tethered cord syndrome, a rare neurological disorder.?
With this newfound knowledge, Courtney joined a Facebook community of parents whose children also had this problem. She painstakingly analysed Alex's MRI notes, cross-referencing them with ChatGPT's instructions. One particular feature piqued her interest: Alex's discomfort while sitting cross-legged. This, she reasoned, suggested a structural problem.
Courtney immediately scheduled a consultation with a neurosurgeon, expressing her concern about tethered cord syndrome. The neurosurgeon evaluated the MRI and verified Alex's diagnosis, ushering in a new chapter in their medical history. This isn't the first time ChatGPT has contributed to the diagnosis of medical issues.?
Earlier this year, a Twitter user described how the AI technology properly identified a diagnosis for their beloved dog when traditional doctors had failed. AI tools have proven their worth and abilities in enhancing people's lives over time. However, as recent studies have shown, some people around the world are still losing their jobs as a result of AI.
