They say 'eyes are window to the soul'...and now, apparently, a person's face is a window to their financial status!?
According to a recent study, people's faces can be used to determine whether they are rich or poor.?
Researchers at the University of Glasgow investigated what makes someone appear to be from a higher or lower social class - so affluent or not so rich - based on people's perceptions of their appearance.
The researchers, who conducted the study with white volunteers from Western cultures, were able to discover which characteristics were automatically connected with someone belonging to a higher or lower class.?So what makes you appear richer??
According to the findings, published in the APA Journal of Experimental Psychology, general people with narrow faces, upturned mouths, closely spaced eyes, elevated brows, and a warmer complexion are better off.Interestingly, respondents associated these characteristics with competence, kindness, and trustworthiness.
In contrast, people believed to be of lower social status had larger, shorter, and flatter faces, as well as downturned mouths and colder complexions.
Following suit, these individuals were perceived to be less competent and trustworthy.?
Dr R Thora Bjornsdottir, the study's author, commented on the discovery, saying: "People who are thought to be of high or low social class standing are generally judged as having favorable or negative features, accordingly. Such judgments are formed based on face appearance alone, and they can have serious effects, including disadvantages for persons thought to be of lower social classes."
"In this work, by disclosing the facial traits that underpin these subjective judgements, we provide fresh insights into what makes someone appear affluent or poor, as well as how these judgments relate to positive and negative stereotypes (such as competence vs. incompetence)," she adds.
