South Korea is currently witnessing a political upheaval stemming from President Yoon Suk Yeol's attempt to enforce martial law on December 3. While the contentious law was lifted within six hours, millions have hit the streets, demanding the president's resignation and impeachment. The protests have now gained momentum, with several K-celebs, including Son Ye Jin, Bong Joon Ho and Jeon Ji Hyun among others extending their support.
Hallyuwood is rallying behind the movement to oust President Yoon Suk Yeol. According to Koreaboo, on December 7, KST, Son Ye Jin, Bong Joon Ho, Jeon Ji Hyun, Kang Dong Won, and Moon So Ri, among other notable celebs signed a joint letter demanding the president's impeachment.
Backed by 77 organizations in the entertainment industry and 2,518 professionals, the letter emphasises that President Yoon and his associates must face the consequences of their actions. The letter labels President Yoon as a "criminal caught in the act," and urges for his immediate arrest.
It read: "The first prerequisite to overcoming the current chaotic situation and the fallen status of the Republic of Korea is to suspend Yoon Suk Yeol from his presidential duties. ※If impeachment is the fastest way, then we should choose impeachment, and if there is another way to remove him from office, then we should find the fastest way."
Days after declaring martial law, President Yoon Suk Yeol addressed the public for the first time on Sunday (December 8), extending an apology for the nationwide unrest caused by his actions. Despite widespread calls for his resignation, Mr Yoon refused said that his party would work with the government to stabilise the situation. He also clarified the another potential martial law will not be declared in the country.?
"To address circulating concerns about another potential martial law declaration, I want to state unequivocally that no such thing will ever happen again. As for measures to ensure political stability moving forward, including my remaining term in office, I will entrust these decisions to my party," he added.
