Struggling to lose weight? Well, amid the poor eating habits and lifestyle choices, being fit is one of the major concerns among people across the world. Many people step back to follow a dedicated weight loss journey, but imagine if a weight-loss plan that doesn't require intense workouts, expensive gym memberships, or complicated diets is available to you? Let¡¯s understand this on World Obesity Day.?
Well, with the advancement of technology and better tracking systems, the 10,000-step rule has garnered much attention in the recent past. The history behind the number itself wasn't based on science, but it originated from a 1965 Japanese pedometer marketing campaign.?
Over time, it became a weight loss trick. A study published in Atherosclerosis examined the data from over 450,000 adults to understand how daily stair climbing impacts cardiovascular health.?
The study revealed that climbing just 5 flights of stairs a day, or around 50 steps, can reduce the risk of heart diseases by 20 per cent and indicate weight loss. ¡°Walking a distance of 10,000 steps a day has been hailed as an easy method of controlling weight. This level of exercise aims at burning calories and supporting overall health without resorting to strenuous routines,¡± says Dr. Neha Pandita, Consultant Neurologist, Fortis Escorts, Okhla.
Obesity has become a global health threat that affects over 650 million adults across the globe, as per the WHO report. While many view it primarily as a cosmetic concern, the reality is far more complex and potentially dangerous. According to Dr. Pandita, ¡°Depending on a person's speed and their body weight, walking this long could burn up to 500 calories every day, thus continuously maintaining a calorie deficit.¡±
¡°Besides being calorie-burning, walking improves metabolism and builds muscle tone in addition to aiding in digestion and having the effect of reducing stress, therefore avoiding emotional eating. Unlike vigorous workouts, walking is gentle on the joints and can include people of all fitness levels,¡± she adds.
Incorporating more steps in our daily lives can be very simple. Dr. Pandita says, ¡°Walking rather than using the short distances or taking the stairs and going for evening walks can become wonderful motivators towards reaching the ultimate 10,000 steps a day goal. Walking with a pedometer or a smartphone app tracking step counts can provide great motivation. Combine.¡±?
The World Health Organization emphasises that obesity prevention should start early. Meanwhile, Dr. Shrihari Anikhindi, Associate Consultant, Institute of Liver Gastroenterology & Pancreatico Biliary Sciences, Sir Gangaram Hospital, shares, ¡°People who are already affected need to seek professional help. They can opt for personalised treatments too.¡±
