In a miraculous medical surgery, doctors in Israel managed to reattach a boy¡¯s head to his body after he got into a harrowing crash with a car while riding his bike. The 12-year-old Palestinian from the West Bank, Suleiman Hassan, went through what is known as an internal decapitation.?
After the crash, Hassan¡¯s skull detached from the top vertebrae of his spine. In medical terms, the condition is called bilateral atlanto-occipital joint dislocation, according to The Times of Israel.?
On the day of the accident. Hassan was riding his bike when he got rammed by a car and endured fatal injuries. The little boy was rushed to the hospital, Hadassah Medical Center, and was immediately put into?surgery?in the trauma unit.
The doctors who attended to the boy at the time said that his head was "almost completely detached from the base of his neck." According to the orthopaedic surgeon on call that day, Dr. Ohad Einav, the procedure took several hours to complete and required the doctors to use "new plates and fixations in the damaged area."
The doctor attributed their success to the knowledge they had gained and the technology they were provided in the operating room. He also added that the team fought hard for the boy¡¯s life and were, fortunately, able to save him.
Einav noted that Hassan has a projected survival rate of only 50%, and his recovery is nothing short of a miracle. The accident actually took place back in June, but the hospital waited a month before announcing that their doctors had reattached a child¡¯s head.
The hospital has now discharged Hassan with a cervical splint and plans to continue monitoring his progress and recovery for a while.
