Imagine you are a surgeon, and you operate on a patient suffering from a stomachache only to find a store-worth of products lodged in his system. Yes, this did happen in real life!
Doctors in?Punjab?were astonished when they found a man who had been experiencing a persistent stomachache for two years because he had consumed a vast array of household items, including buttons and earphones, equivalent to the inventory of a neighbourhood store.?
Kuldeep Singh, a 35-year-old patient, had sought medical attention at the hospital due to severe stomach issues, which he believed to be terminal, along with a high fever.
Medical professionals conducted a scan of the affected area, leading to a startling revelation. Singh had apparently ingested approximately 60 miscellaneous items, such as lockets, chains, nuts, bolts, earphones, safety pins, magnets, shirt buttons, zippers, and various other non-edible objects that should not be in a human being¡¯s digestive tract.?
Ajmer Singh Kalra, director of the Moga Medicity Hospital in Moga, clarified, ¡°On carrying out an X-ray, we found lockets, chains, nuts, bolts, earphones, and many other objects inside the?stomach.¡±
Doctors diagnosed the hardware-taster with pica, which is a mental health condition where the sufferer ¡°compulsively swallows items that aren¡¯t food.¡±
This condition is prevalent among young children, pregnant women, and individuals with psychiatric disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, or?schizophrenia.?
The patient's relatives and family were unaware of Singh¡¯s condition, as per Jam Press. As expected, consuming non-digestible objects can pose serious health risks, as demonstrated in Singh's case.
Kalra, who operated on the man, said, ¡°Since he had eaten sharp objects, there were severe wounds in his stomach.¡± Following this, Singh underwent a three-hour surgical procedure led by surgeon Anup Handa and gastroenterologist Vishavnoor Kalra.??
Although the procedure was a success, the patient is not yet entirely in the clear. Kalra reported, ¡°He is still on a ventilator and is critical.¡±
