An elephant protected a four-year-old girl after she fell from a scooter in the Jalpaiguri district on February 21, forest officials said. The incident occurred on National Highway 31 near the Garumara forest.
The family of the 4-year-old were returning to Lataguri after offering puja at a temple inside the forest. Businessman Nitu Ghosh, his wife Titli and their daughter Ahana, stopped the two-wheeler after seeing a herd of elephants was crossing the road.

After a while, the elephants went to the other side of the jungle and Ghosh began his journey again, the officials said. However, some other members of the herd were left and appeared on the road from nowhere when their scooter almost ran into them. Ghosh applied the brakes suddenly and all the three fell down of the scooter.
But suddenly, one of the jumbos came forward and stood still keeping the girl between its legs while other members of the herd continued walking. When all the members of the herd left the spot the elephant left Ahana and she was back in her mother¡¯s arms.
A truck driver who was passing from that road sensed that something was wrong and rushed to their rescue hooting the horn of his truck to scare away the elephants. The truck driver then took the family to Lataguri and Ghosh and his wife were admitted to the hospital as they were injured.
The elephant did a really good deed saving the girl but after the incident, the girl was traumatised.?
